Levenmouth Public Art Project 2024

The reinstatement of Levenmouth Rail Link will provide the area with a major boost to economic sustainability and connectivity. It will deliver opportunities for local people - unlocking access to education, culture, entertainment and employment options, as well attracting new business and investment.

Kerry Wilson has been engaged to lead on, in consultation with the local community, a large scale work that can pick up on the history of the link and its potential for the future to the area and its people.

We already know that there is a positive response to the idea of public art for Leven. Murals are a low-cost, high impact way of transforming and beautifying space. They might be purely that, or they may also remind us of something, celebrate our heritage, covey a message, or create a sense of pride or just an uplifting vibe. We have several other murals in Fife which have now become local tourist attractions, featured on global social media, in books and on TV.

Project Outcomes (Phase 1)

1.Identify Location

As yet, no specific site has been confirmed for a public art project. As part of the rail link development, there will be two new stations on the line at Cameron Bridge and at Leven which are currently being built. The artist will consider existing sites suggested as part of this exercise and make recommendations accordingly.

Suggested Sites

Do you know any reasons why or why not the following sites could be used for a mural?

2. Ownership and opportunity

When creating a successful piece of public art, it’s important that there is some sense of ownership and approval from the local community. Levenmouth Academy Art Department are offering the opportunity to young artists to work with Kerry to develop concepts for the artwork. We are looking for answers to the following questions to help us get started;

  • What difference will the rail link make to your life?
Could you tell us in a few sentences what you think the future looks like for Leven?

  • Do you have any other information you would like to give us at this stage?

  • Would you like to be involved in the project, and if so, in what capacity?

Next Steps

We will be looking for approval of proposals once they are developed. Barry from the local Community Learning and Development team will be leading on this Phase through his contacts with key stakeholders, community networks and social media.
